Phase I of Individualized Language Development , the origin of School Speak, was supported by the Institute of Education Sciences, U.S. Department of Education, through contract #ED-08-PO-0579 to Seward Inc. The opinions expressed do not necessarily represent the views of the U.S. Department of Education. The project officer for this project was Dr. Ram Singh.
In Phase I of the Individualized Language Development project, Seward created and tested the School Speak prototype. The proposed curriculum supplement consisted of an online assessment and key components of a media-rich, individualized, age-appropriate, computer-based vocabulary instruction program for upper elementary students (grades 4-6). The goal of the project is to help teachers identify missing language skills in English Language Learners (ELLs) and other language-delayed students and to provide supplementary instruction that develops vocabulary skills so students can better understand and communicate in English at the level required for success in American classrooms. |
