Knowing word meanings, being able to speak words properly, and being able to understand and use words properly in context are the three areas assessed in the School Speak Assessment. This online instrument consists of 106 items assessing knowledge of 36 words representing the spectrum of words taught through the system. Items use progressively less common words as students work through the assessment. Students are given 30 minutes to complete as many items as possible.
Students wear headsets with microphones while completing the School Speak Assessment. They hear directions and questions through the headphones. Test items require students to interact with images presented on the computer screen and to verbally respond to online prompts. Automated speech recognition technology is used to analyze students' spoken responses.
